One such bomber believed to be a Short Stirling III BK718 "WP-M" of No.90 Sq., lost the night of 3/4 July, 1943, target Köln. It's Flt Engr, Sgt Hugh Murray, of Fife Scotland, was KilledInAction (KIA), and buried Overloon War cem Noord Brabant, Neth,. location III.A.I..The inventor of the "Wilde Sau" System, 26 June, 1943. EL 8/2/43. The use of single-engine fighters for night operations. Very costly in terms of pilots and AC. Herrmann came to fighters from bombers. The Bf 109T-1 (questionable) was the type destined for use on the carrier Graff Zepplin, however this project was cancelled by order of Hitler. In January, 1944, he was appointed Kdr of Jagddivision 30, over all three of the Wilde Sau units, 300, 301 & 302. In March 1945, he commanded Sonderkommando-Elbe, a Bf 109 unit whose purpose was to ram Allied bombers. Only about 24 successful attacks were recorded. About 370 combat missions, serving in Spain, Poland, Norway, France Malta and Greece, before founding the Wilde Sau Units. Sank 12 Soviet convoy ships, about 65,000BRT. Also known to have flown Fw 190A-5 "Black 1" as Kdr JG-300. Spent ten long years in Russian captivity. Released with Hartmann, Graf, Wiese and Hans Baur. Deceased 11/5/2010 Düsseldorf.

Apparently lost on the return flight, he sent out an SOS signal at 22:26 and 23:45 hours, and was then intercepted and attacked 40 miles south of Worthing by S/L J.G.Topham (DFC) and F/L Strange in Beaufighter II, X7690, of RAF No.219 Sq.. At 00:16 hours, he received a Directional Fix from Paris-Villacoublay giving a position of 40 miles northeast of Cherbourg. He then "homed" on Caen from the northwest, and at 00:34 hours signalled "Pancake-Pancake Landing", and appears to have crashed into the sea, as he was called between 00:35 and 00:59 hours without reply. Remaining crew: Gefr Karl Küsters, Observer (MIA); Uffz Karl Graf, R/O (KilledInAction (KIA)) and Uffz Hans Jansen, Mech (KilledInAction (KIA)). Reportedly not found, however some reports indicate burial in Plot 188, Grave 72 at St. Anns Hill, Gosport. One known victory, a Spitfire on 16 April, 1942. Added: there is some evidence that R.N. Patrol Trawler ARTIC PIONEER was targeted, attacked and sunk by Oberfw. Graf's fighter in a Hit an Run fighter bomber mission. The survivors of the trawler being rescued by an RAF air sea rescue craft sent speeding to the scene by a distress call, a number of the crew were killed, and they are laid to rest at the Royal Naval Cemetery, Haslar, Gosport. Hans-Ludwig Graf's fighter was shot down during the attack, by anti aircraft guns on the south coast of the Island. The plane ditched into the sea. An air sea rescue craft recovering the bodies of the trawler, also picked up the body of Graf, who was taken to the R.N.H. Haslar, after survivors of the Artic Pioneer's crew were landed at St. Helen's Pier, Isle of Wight. Oberfeldwebel Hans-Ludwig Graf, was buried on Monday 1st June 1942, and is laid to rest in the War Graves Section of Ann's Hill Cemetery, Gosport(FindaGrave, CK) | |||

A WWI ace with 6 victories in 160 Observer missions, and post war Commercial pilot, he became a Party member in 1926 and in 1932 began piloting Hitler. So impressed by Baur, Hitler kept his loyal and trusted pilot until his death in 1945. Baur was an Oberführer in the SS, as was Heydrich. Believed to be a Lt General in the Post-war Luftwaffe.
