| KIFA 29 January, 1944 after combat with a P-38, when he became disorientated in "Yellow 3" in a low cloud cover near Würen Belgium, and struck the ground at Würrich, and was killed. All victories in the West, 15 victories in the Desert, his first and second were P-40s at Ain-el-Gazala and Tobruk on 18 March, 1942. 20 four engine bombers. Scored a victory over a P-46 (?) SW of Bir-el-Abd N.Africa on 20 October, 1942 while in 5/JG-27, and a P-40 the next day southeast of El-Daba. His 42nd and 43rd victories were both B-17s near Stuttgart on 6 September, 1943. He, Kientsch and Stigler were providing cover for an Italian sea plane attempting to rescue downed Italian pilots. His body washed up on shore at Marsala. One known victory, a P-40 10 km east of El Gefera on 6 December, 1942. This was the last victory for II/JG-27, as they turned their AC over to JG-77, and the pilots prepared to leave N. Africa. His 2nd, a P-38 20 km northeast of Zembra on 31 March, 1943. His 3rd, in Sicily, a P-40E 20 km west of Pantellaria on 6 June, 1943. | |||||

One 21 December, 1943, he was forced to bail from his "Yellow 4" with severe wounds during aerial combat at Eupen, east of Malmedy. Survived the war. Became a Bürgermeister for the Stadt, Unkel. Deceased 25 February, 2004. Jager Blatt mention. This could be Karl Schmidt, a Lt by April 1945, who survived the war, and with one victory posted by OKL under the the Schmidt. |
