Friedrich Alpers (25 March 1901 – 3 September 1944) was a German Nazi politician and SS-Obergruppenführer. He was also a Minister of the Free State of Brunswick,[2] and Generalforstmeister (General forest supervisor). Alpers was responsible for numerous political crimes in Brunswick. Alpers committed suicide in 1944, while in US custody. NSDAP and SS career Born in 1901, Alpers studied law and political science at the Heidelberg University, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and University of Greifswald. He became a lawyer in 1929. In June 1929, Alpers joined the Nazi Party (NSDAP membership number 132,812). In May 1930 he joined the Sturmabteilung (SA). On 1 March 1931 he joined the SS (membership number 6,427). He was an active member in the SS, rising to the rank of Obergruppenführer. Since October 1930, he was Minister of the Brunswick State Parliament. Alpers was twice temporarily suspended from the SS in 1933 following complaints of excessive violence made against him during the Nazi takeover of Brunswick. Minister of the Free State of Brunswick After the Nazi seizure of power, Alpers became Finance and Justice Minister of Brunswick on 8 May 1933 (a position in which he served until 1934) under the Ministerpräsident Dietrich Klagges. Along with Klagges and Friedrich Jeckeln, Alpers was one of the main persons responsible for the Gleichschaltung and persecution of political opponents in the Free State of Brunswick. Rieseberg-murder Subordinated to Alpers was Klagges "Hilfspolizei" ("Auxiliary Police"). This force was directly answerable to Klagges and consisted of SA, SS and Stahlhelm men. On 4 July 1933, Alpers was directly involved in the Rieseberg-murder of eleven communists and labor organizers in Rieseberg, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Braunschweig.

Night Fighter Operational Clasp		KilledInAction (KIA) 7 December, 1944 NW of Münster-Handorf by an RAF Long Range Night Fighter flown by Flt Lt Hedgecoe. Another source suggests the G-4 Werk # as 740078. Augenstein and his R/O, Uffz Günther Steins were killed, and the gunner, Uffz Kurt Schmidt, managed to bale out successfully. WIA 16 June, 1944 during aerial combat at Roubaix Be., with Uffz's Schmidt and Steins, also this incident. One known victory, a Wellington 1 km southeast of Ahlhorn on 1 August, 1942. Five known victories were bombers, including two Lancasters by Zwolle on 23 October, 1943. Another, a Halifax at Emmerich on 15 February, 1944. A Halifax 4 km ESE of Maastricht on 28 April, 1944. Added: The only VDK burial match is for Ofw (promoted?) Steins, War Cem. Münster-Waldfriedhof Lauheide in Field G, Grave 3 (D.Drury).

Hauptmann Heinz Baader (March 25, 1916 - February 18, 1966) was a pilot of aufklärer (scout) who was born and raised in Munich (later he also died there). He was awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on April 26, 1945 as Hauptmann in Nahaufklärungsgruppe 5 (led by Major Hermann Schmidt) for the extraordinary effort he displayed at Cirava (Kurland), although I did not get information about what his business was like. One type of aircraft he had piloted was Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 / U3. Baader was promoted to Oberfeldwebel on January 25, 1943, Leutnant on April 16, 1944, and Hauptmann on April 26, 1945 (together with his gift of the Ritterkreuz). Other medals and awards he received: Flugzeugführerabzeichen; Eisernes Kreuz II.Klasse and I.Klasse; Dienstauszeichnung der Wehrmacht III.Klasse; Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42 (1942); Luftwaffe Ehrenpokale für Besondere Leistungen im Luftkrieg (January 25, 1943); Frontflugspange für Aufklärer in Gold; and the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold (April 16, 1944)

Bomber Operational Clasp		KIA 14 September, 1943 in the vicinity of Ivanovka, Russia (Pl.Qu.69844). His ac exploded due to being attacked by fighters at the time of his bomb release (D.Drury). On 5 July, 1943, his ac crashed and exploded on landing at Kharkhiv-Voichenko airfield, Ukraine, after being attacked by fighters. Accompanying him on this flight, a second pilot, Lt Horst Wendt (DK-G Awards List & D.Drury). Alternate spelling: Bartels. See Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries for further detail. Fighter Operational Clasp		KilledInAction (KIA) 11 April, 1943 during aerial combat with a Spitfire 2 km south of Sedjoumi. Baumgartner damaged his E-4 on 5 January, 1941, on a takeoff from Dinan France (D.Dahiot). Briefly a POW on 15 October, 1941 when making an emergency landing 45 km south of Ischum. Added: His wingman this day was Uffz Franz Schmidt, who downed a Soviet Pe-2 bomber (C.Sundin). He escaped and returned on 29 October. The AC was apparently recovered, as it was reported 25% damaged in combat on 3 November. His first victory, a Hurricane I northeast of Malemes, into the sea, on 14 May, 1941. One known Soviet victory in 9 Staffel was a Russian MiG-3 piloted by Lt Stepan Komlev, who successfully bailed out. A triple Soviet victory on 5 February, 1942; Two SB-2s and a MiG-3. A DB-3 on 16 March, 1942. A MiG-3 on 10 May, 1942. A Soviet triple on 11 May, 1942; two I-61s and a Pe-2. An Il-2 on 13 May, 1942. Two LaGG-3s on 16 May, 1942. His 24th victory, an unnamed Soviet AC on 7 June, 1942. His 26th was a Soviet AC on 2 July, 1942. His 27th, a Pe-2 on 10 July, 1942. A Yak-1 on 4 October, 1942. One known Desert victory, a Kittyhawk on 10 March, 1943. Another, an Aircobra on 13 March, 1943. Added: Ofw Baumgartner buried in the German War Cem., Bordj-Cedria, Tunisia, "Hof MOR, Ossario 6, Tafel 12" (D.Drury).

It had been attacked by a Bf 109 near Rotterdam during a camoflage monitoring flight, and crashed in shallow water at Haringvliet, near Hellevoetslius/Rockanje Holland. The AC was recovered by a Luftwaffe Recovery team. Remaining crew: Ofw Volk, Fw Schmidt and Uffz Lentfert. Volk & Lentfert will go MIA 9 December, 1941 with Lt. Böhme. Served from August, 1939. probably at least Destroyer Operational Clasp in Bronze		WIA on 18/07/43 when shot down N of the Aetna with his Radop/Gunr Fw Hans Wolfsteiner (WIA). Have made already over 80 combat flights (and 1087 flights in all) up to 07/42. Mentioned in the summary of Günter Schultze-Quentells life (AirWar Publications) - he flew as a passenger on a courier flight with a Bf-110 under pilot Willi Bründl to the main airfield of 2.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 14 at Gasr-el-Regen in the summer of 1941 and on 01/10/41 again to Bir-el-Gabr when he returned after his marriage holiday. On 12/06/41 on transit flight of new aircraft for 2.(H)/ Aufkl.Gr. 14 from Lippstadt via Leipheim and Africa. On 02/09/41 he flew with Obsv Rabanser and Gunr Stolz a courier flight in the morning from Martuba to Bir el Gabr and later a combat mission from Bir el Gabr and afterwards a courier flight back to Martuba. On 09/10/41 he had to force land his HS-126 20km E of Barce. Bründl eventually made it back to base two days later. He was flying a Fi-156 Kurierflug with the Obsv Hans-Dietrich Komnick on 01/02/42. On 11/02/42 he flew a mission with Obsv Ernst von Weyrauch and a man from a Propagandakompanie as Gunr. He flew with his crew Radop Schulze from Lippstadt to Martuba between 12-18/06/41. Many more combat and courier flights followed (Flugbuch available if questions occur!). He flew often with his Radop/Gunr Fw Hans Wolfsteiner - from 2.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 14 in 1943 via 4.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 12 to ZG 26 in 1943 (!) (Fw 200 Losses, 1988 Book per H. Breuer & D. Drury). Added (CKönig): on 24/03/41 he was awarded the Ritterkreuz for his courageous attacks on heavily defended convoys in the North Atlantic. Credited with sinking at least 61,000 GRT of shipping and damaging another 48,000 GRT. An official caption on a backside of a photo stated that Buchholz had sunk over 78,000 GRT of enemy merchant ships. May have been promoted to Hauptmann postmortem.

Shot down twice: 24 June, 1941 (once in Werk # 2140) behind Russian lines, but he and his R/O, Uffz Zantke, managed to get back safely. The Observer, Fw Biermann, was killed. In 1945; he was shot down by his own Flak on a Night mission. A Luftwaffe pilot since February 1939. 200+ missions. A personal friend of my good friend, Hans Hoehler. In 2001, at 87, Hans describes Willi as "active as a fish in water". Added: Ofw Dietrich and Observer Lt Eberhard Winkler (DK-G 2/13/43), and two unnamed, survived a forced landing on 2 October, 1942, 15km NE of Berdyansk, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine, close to th Sea of Asov. All the crew returned to their unit. The cause of the loss was radio failure and fuel starvation. Added: Ofw Dietrich's crew as of 5/7/42: Lt Eberhard Winkler, Stffüh; Uffz Biermann, Uffz Kummer and OGefr Michael Deiml (Stellenbesetzung Research 5/2025). He was hospitalized for some time.His Wk# 6327 reported lost 3 May, 1941; sd by British fighters during an attack on shipping in Suda Bay, Crete. He and his R/O Fw Gustav Schreiber, were able to get into their raft. Observer Hptm Dietrich Illgner and Gunner, Uffz Hans Conze, went down with the aircraft. Added: Rescued by the British after 17 hours in the raft - later repatriated by German paratroops. Awarded the Ritterkreuz for his success against enemy warships and shipping off England and in the Black Sea. Transferred to Russia, where he 05.42 claimed to have heavily damaged a cruiser and sunk 65,000 GRT of shipping vic the Crimea in 05/42. (CK).Deceased 4 January, 1953, Nürnberg.
