Kervyn de Lettenhove: Belgian Aristocrat in the Air

Kervyn de Lettenhove obtained his civil flying certificate at Hendon on 27 April 1916, followed by his military wings on October 11th, 1916.

Kervyn obtained his civil flying certificate at Hendon on 27 April 1916, followed by his military wings on October 11th, 1916. 'Jojo' was posted to N°1 fighter Squadron and scored 3 aerial victories in his Nieuport called 'Vampire'. By the war's end he had flown no less than 519 war missions during which he fought 138 combats.

After the war Kervyn de Lettenhove went for a military career and ended as a General in the function of Inspector General and Adjudant of Prince Karel when he was Regent of Belgium.

He retired in 1950 and died at Ixelles (Brussels) on 17 November 1979.
