Search help:

Searching: why is the usual site Search box missing on Database pages?

Solution

For an explanation of how Search works on the site, see Search Tips

Site search is like a Google search but is restricted to the contents of our site. It works the same way as a Google web search works, basically going through and indexing all site contents.

Databases are a special category of content. They are structured. All database entries follow the same format as all the others in that particular database. They are more like lists than the unstructured data you find on the web or elsewhere on our site. If you are familiar with spreadsheets, databases are similar in appearance.

We provide a specialized Search facility for databases which is optimized for that format. You can read about its special nature in the Search Tips button on all the databases.

To avoid confusing readers about which Search box they should use on databases, we remove the Site search box found on all the other pages.
