9. Arnhem Moscowa, Gelderland, Netherlands

Waterbergseweg 18, 6815AP Arnhem, 52.00647N/5.91543E

Moscowa 050603-1

Two chapels were 'built in the Gothic style, by Mr. Orchard, of Banbury, at a cost of about £900.' The whole expense, including site and buildings, was £2,500 (John Baxter in the Hinckley Parish Magazine (1874), 29-30).

Canadian War Cemetery

14. Botley Cemetery, North Hinksey, Oxford, UK

North Hinksey, North Hinksey Lane, close to A34.

Botley 050620-1

Botley Cemetery in North Hinksey Lane has an area of about an acre surrounded by a yew hedge, administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWCG), where servicemen from both World Wars lie buried.

From the 1914-18 War there are 167 graves, mainly of men who died in the 3rd Southern General Hospital whose main base was in the Examination Schools. A large Memorial cross in the cemetery dates from this period.

During the 1939-45 War, Botley became the regional cemetery of the Royal Air Force. Of the 580 graves, 457 are of airmen (165 from Britain, 151 Australians, 85 Canadians, 54 New Zealanders and 2 South Africans). The remaining graves include some of German and Italian prisoners of War.

Over each grave is the distinctive headstone of the CWGC (2'8' high in Portland stone), and the graves - nearly 750 of them - are arranged in ordered lines and in an immaculately kept garden, all in the best tradition of the CWGC.

As in all CWGC cemeteries of any size, Oxford's has a Stone of Remembrance, a ten-ton block of Portland stone, 12 feet long, raised up on three steps, made to the design of Sir Edwin Lutyens (who also designed the Cenotaph in Whitehall). The Stone is inscribed on both sides with words chosen by Rudyard Kipling from Ecclesiasticus 44.14:

THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE

Most CWGC cemeteries of this size also have a Cross of Sacrifice, but here the existing Memorial cross was obviously deemed sufficient.

Another feature of the Oxford CWGC cemetery is an attractive Shelter in Portland stone where the Register is kept, listing all the service graves in the Oxford region, including those at Botley.

An avenue of silver birch trees leads from the Memorial cross to the Stone of Remembrance, and the trees at the back of the Stone are Canadian maple presented by the Canadian government in honour of the 85 Canadians buried there.

15. Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, UK

Brookwood Military Cemetery, Royal Air Force Shelter, adjacent to the RAF plots. Brookwood 050618-11

The original cemetery was laid out in 1854 and has been in constant use ever since.

In the mid-nineteenth century the volume of London's dead was causing considerable public concern. So in 1850, the idea of a great metropolitan cemetery, situated in the suburbs and large enough to contain all of London's dead for an indefinite period, was promoted. An interested group formed 'The London Necropolis and National Mausoleum Company' (1852) to achieve these aims. 2,000 acres of Woking's common lands were acquired from Lord Onslow. Some 400 acres were initially planted out (1854) for the Cemetery at the western end of this estate. As Brookwood could be reached cheaply and conveniently only by railway, the London & South Western Railway was engaged to convey coffins and mourners from Waterloo to the Cemetery. Private stations were provided at both ends of the journey. Waterloo mainline in London and Brookwood Cemetery North and South Stations within the cemetery itself, which served each half of the Cemetery. Brookwood Cemetery was consecrated by the Bishop of Winchester on 7th November 1854 and opened to the public from 13th November.

Since then, there have been in excess of 232,650 people buried within the cemetery. Plots could be reserved for use by parishes or other groups; individuals had complete freedom over the site and position of the grave plot (provided they could afford the price); the military cemeteries, separately administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, were begun in 1917 and extended substantially during and after the Second World War; the funeral trains stopped running into the Cemetery after the Necropolis Company's London terminus was bombed in 1941 - the 'Glades of Remembrance', an area set aside for the burial of cremated remains, was opened in 1950. The London Necropolis Company was dissolved around 1975 and although the grounds have changed hands several times since then, the Cemetery remains privately owned and administered.

The plots within the Military Cemeteries are administered separately by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and similar organisations from other countries. More than 4,220 casualties from both World Wars are buried in the CWCG sections, in addition there are 468 American War dead, the War dead from other nations and other casualties buried elsewhere in Brookwood cemetery.

By 1923, Calgary was well on its way to becoming a major western centre and the Union Cemetery was running short of space. A new burial place was opened across what is now Spiller Road called the Burnsland cemetery. There are about 21,000 graves in Burnsland, including most of the city's World War I War veterans.

By 1940, most of the burial plots on Burnsland had been either filled or sold, and the City had to once again acquire more burial property. The solution was to move out of Calgary's central core to the North Hill. The new cemetery, called Queen's Park, would later include a section called the Veterans' Field of Honuor.

The War graves are looked after by Mr. Deric Brock, who does so since 1984. He traced the relatives of all but one, in a research quest spanning two decades, and published their portraits in the Pembrokeshire Life magazine. Mr. Brock is also engaged in the Control Tower Museum, in the restaurated control tower of former RAF Carew Cheriton, a few hundred meters West of the cemetery.

These Dutch RAF aviators are also commemorated on a plaque in the Pembroke Dock Gun Tower Museum, unveiled by former 320/321 Sqn members on 6/1/2005.

Cedar Lawn Cemetery Memorial

21. Cherbourg, Cimetière Ancien 'Pieux' Manche, France

Cherbourg Cem 050623-3

Although the cemetery is called Chevington Cemetery by CWGC, and East Chevington Cemetery by OGS, its location is actually directly SW of Broomhill, close to the former RAF Acklington grounds. Some refer to it as Broomhill Cemetery. The Cemetery is locally officially known as East Chevington Cemetery. There is no postal address for it. It is situated on the outskirts of Red Row and South Broomhill. It is maintained by Castle Morpeth Borough Council.

During the Second World War there was a Royal Air Force Sector Airfield at Acklington and the majority of the War burials from this period at nearby Chevington Cemetery are of airmen. Most of these graves are grouped together in a War graves plot behind the chapel. Elsewhere in the cemetery are six burials of the First World War. The cemetery also contains three Polish War graves and a separate group of 17 German burials near the War graves plot. 74 identified casualties. Source: CWGC

The fighter training unit trained many famous Spitfire pilots from several countries and when training became more intense a satellite station opened at Balado Bridge (home to Tin the Park) and No 2 Tactical Exercise Unit was formed and flew from there. Sadly, quite a few pilots and aircrew were killed training for War and are buried at Grandsable, their average age being just over 20.

Grebbeberg 050514

The British War Cemetery is located on the vast grounds of the Hauptfriedhof Ohlsdorf in Hamburg, North of the center. This cemetery, founded in 1877, is claimed to be the largest one in the world. Lanes for motor traffic run through it. The cemetery can be entered in several locations. Trying to find graves on foot cannot be advised.

The British section has two plots. One South of the Lärchenallee with WW1 graves, and one facing it North of the lane, with 1919-1945 graves. Two Dutch aviators from 320 Squadron are buried here.

This part of the cemetery is not to be confused with an all Dutch section in the Hauptfriedhof, that holds 353 graves of Dutchmen killed in WW2 in the Hamburg area. Furthermore, this Dutch section has three stones of remembrance, with the names of another 99 Dutch casualties.

The grave numbers that are on record with the CWGC, and with that the grave positions of the two Dutchmen as known to OGS, are probably in error. On 6/2/2007 we asked the CWGC to take a look at this:

Dear Sirs,

I have reason to believe that the numbering of the War graves in Hawarden Cemetery, Flintshire, may be in error. It looks as if the positions of initial burial in Hawarden are given, whilst the War graves were grouped together later. The War graves plot has 4 rows, the frontal one with six graves, the others with 12 grave positions, see the pictures attached. The CWGC database however mentions the following positions for the 33 graves that are on record:

1/F/68, 75

2/C/56

2/F/50

2/G/35, 46

2/H/42

3/E/42

3/G/75

3/J/30

3/K/25

4/F/84, 86, 94, 95, 96

4/G/4, 5, 6, 14, 15, 16, 24, 25, 26, 34, 35, 36, 44, 45, 46, 84, 96

This means that the graves would be scattered over 4 plots, in 1, 4, 4 and 2 rows respectively. Grave numbering 5 to 96 in 4/G also cannot reflect the current reality.

Could you please enlighten me? I'm especially interested in the correct positions of the two Dutch graves here:

P.J. van Boxtel, died 28-10-1941, not in the CWGC online database, known to OGS as buried in grave 96, no plot or row number given, actually buried in the leftmost grave in the front row in my picture

H.W. Pronk, died 2-11-1941, known to CWGC and OGS as buried in grave 4/G/84, actually buried in the leftmost grave in the rear row in my picture

If you would agree that the current numbering is out of date, then could we agree to the following grave indications for the two Dutchmen, following the usual CWGC method of rows A to Z, numbers 1 to X, counting from the left:

Van Boxtel, grave B/1

Pronk, grave D/1

Yours sincerely

Unfortunately, this request did not meet with an answer.

Most of the 3,335 casualties who rest in the cemetery were airmen who died throughout the War years in bombing attacks on Germany. Their graves were brought from cemeteries in Düsseldorf, Krefeld, Mönchen-Gladbach, Essen, Cologne, Aachen, Dortmund and many other places in the area. Some were first buried in isolated graves where their aircraft crashed; by a roadside, a river bank, in a garden or a forest. From one town alone, Cologne, over 450 Air Force casualties who had been buried by the Germans were reburied here.

Designed by Philip Hepworth and first opened in 1946, the cemetery is pleasantly sited in agricultural land protected on the north, east and west by neighbouring woods. It is formal in design; wrought-iron gates in a wide entrance open to a central turfed avenue where the Stone of Remembrance and Cross of Sacrifice stand.

These Monuments are described in the notes on Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. A shelter on each side of the Stone and a colonnade beyond the Cross are built of Oberkirchner stone. A second avenue stretches across the cemetery from the south-west to the north-east boundaries, where semi-circular stone seats are placed.

Grünewaldstrasse, SE of Kleve, on the Eastern side of the road, 06.0711E/51.7309N.

Reichswald 050708-5

The British War cemetery is located in the municipal forest 'Reichswald' and has a surface area of 5.128 ha. The grounds are the property of the forestry treasury. This cemetery is officially named 'Reichswald War Cemetery'.

Special British units followed behind the fighting troops and took care of the initial burials and recorded with precision the co-ordinates and the identities of the fallen soldiers. They also took care of burying German soldiers. Despite this, the military government only had the possibility, from the middle of 1945 onWards, to search for Allied troops who had been missing. The search for members of the British Air Force was made with particular exactitude: every single piece of wreckage of an aircraft found had to be precisely recorded with details as to its location.
The planning of a collective cemetery was incumbent upon the British pendant to the German National Union:

The "Imperial War Graves Commission", situated at North West Europe Area, Elverdingerstraat 82, B - 8900 Ypern, was founded as a Royal Trust by King George V on the 21st of May 1917. Its President was the Prince of Wales and the first chairman was Winston Churchill. In the year 1969 it was renamed to 'Commonwealth Graves Commission' (CWGC). Shortly after the second world War this commission appointed an area for mass graves in the Reichswald. The architect in office was Philip Hepworth.
Under the auspices of the appointed supervisor of the CWGC the transposing of the fallen soldiers began, a task in which also German prisoners of War who were in a Canadian compound in the vicinity of the Reichswald were involved.
As early as January 1948 it was made possible to the Director of the Municipal Borough of Kleve to officially give notice of the transport of all deceased Allied soldiers who had lost their lives in the district.

This led to the creation of the largest British War cemetery out of the 15 combined cemeteries in Germany, with a total of 7,654 graves.

About 4,000 of the perished soldiers belonged to the Royal Air Force. They already found their death between the years 1940 and 1944 during air combats. (feitelijk 3.985 air force)
But also the soldiers who lost their lives during fights in and around the Reichswald and the Rhine bridges, including those involved in these air combats near Hamminkeln, were buried here.

The British Cemetery compound is being looked after with great care and attention and abides a stringent order that could be considered as being monotonous and somewhat artificial.
These regulations had already been laid down in London in 1971 when the CWGC was founded.

There are three main items for consideration within these regulations:

1) A grave stone is to have the shape of a grave post and bear aathe emblem of the confession of the fallen Warrior. In this way, the multitude of confessions within the British World Power were accounted for. In addition, the emblem pertaining to the military unit was depicted, whereby an inscription as proposed by the family members was to be added at the foot of the stele.

2) Two centrally placed Monuments were to be erected in each aacemetery: firstly, a 'Cross of Sacrifice' in the form of the Irish Saint Patrick Cross upon which the sword of a Knight of the Cross, cast in bronze, was overlaid. Secondly, a square altar stone, the 'Stone of Remembrance', bearing the inscription 'Their Name Liveth For Evermore' was added.

3) The field in which the graves are laid is to be flat and level and has to be adorned equally with rows of head flowerbeds.

The impression that this complex is meant to convey is that of peace and harmony, and this is achieved by this unified layout.

This, too, applies to the Reichswald complex at the entrance of which two towers in Moorish style are erected. This conveys an impression of endlessness over the field of graves. To the left and to the right, protracting in the narrow axis, there are two shelters made of stone originating from the town of Oberkirchen. These shelters also contain the grave registers listing the names of all prisoners. This, too, is an imperative rule applicable to British Cemeteries of Honour.

Towards the middle of the site there is an altar cut in stone which has been designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
On the side opposite to the entrance, backed by the forest and terminating the sighting axis, the Cross of Victims, designed by Reginald Blomfield, is erected.

The eye of the attentive visitor of the cemetery will not overlook the artisan craftsmanship that emanates from the fine detail produced by the stonemasons on the individual gravestones.

The accurate care given to the greenery comes to light and repeatedly amazes the Observer and is explained by the fact that one of the four care centres of the CWGC has its base in the Reichswald.

In any case, this complex enjoys a great deal of popularity which lead to the decision of creating three car parks in the immediate vicinity of the cemetery in 1962. Nonetheless, the car parks are also used by visitors of the well known forest area 'Reichswald', as this recreation area is well known and of over-regional importance.

In reality, and following the CWGC convention of numbering left to right, Hijkoop, Ten Herkel and Otterloo are in graves 1, 2 and 3 of the 2nd row of this plot, or 2/R/1, 2/R/2 and 2/R/3.

Note: names in the cemetery register of those mentioned as buried elsewhere, amount to 176. The register mentions 253 graves, but the entries add up to 254. On the Memorial plates, 49 Dutch RAF aviators, buried elsewhere in the UK or Ireland, are mentioned. Five are buried in Mill Hill.

49. Morpeth, SS. Mary & James Churchyard, Northumberland, UK

The church is on Kirkhill, West on the A197, Morpeth

Morpeth St.Mary 080203-3

The graves are located in sections — the oldest burials being closest to the church with some within it. As time went on the graveyard was extended until it was eventually filled, the furthest extension being the Polish military section in the far West corner where there are the ruins of an old watch house, one of two at St Mary's.

We think of St Mary's Church as going back to the Norman Conquest with a possible Anglo-Saxon predecessor on a pagan holy site. The highest point of the churchyard is a 33ft high obelisk in memory to the Rev J. Bolland of Morpeth, who died in the Holy Land in 1857.

The parish church of St. Mary, situated on Kirk hill, about a mile south of the town, is a plain edifice of stone, in the Decorated style of the 14th century, the lower portion of the tower showing traces of Norman work: the church consists of chancel, which has been well restored, has five stained windows, including a fine Jesse window with fragments of ancient glass, and on the south side are triple canopied sedilia and a mutilated piscina: in the north wall is an aumbry, and on either side of the chancel arch is a hagioscope: the east window of the south aisle contains figues of St. Blaize, Bishop of Sebaste, and St. Denis, Bishop of Paris: the chancel seats and the pulpit are of carved oak: there are sittings for 600 persons. Outside the church on the south are two stone effigies. The churchyard, entered by a lich-gate, built in 1862, retains an ancient cross, now restored, and another, erected as a Memorial to the Rev. J. Bolland, a former curate. The register dates from the year 1585. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £147, gross yearly value £1,300, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Carlisle, and held since 1842 by the Rev. the Hon. Francis Richard Grey M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Newcastle and rural dean of Morpeth. [Kelly's Directory of Durham and Northumberland (1890), page 815.]

CWGC:

The 19 First World War burials in Morpeth (SS. Mary and James) are in the oldest part of the churchyard, and the 13 Second World War burials form part of a War graves plot in the newer western part. However, there was a Polish camp and hospital at Morpeth during and immediately after the War, and most of the graves in this plot are those of Polish servicemen. In addition to these 74 Polish burials, there are seven War graves of other nationalities.

The WW2 graves are located at the end of this large churchyard, to the right.

Photomontage, showing all WW2 graves. Morpeth 080203-4 Back row contains the graves of the Dutch RAF aviators.

The Church is known as the Parish Church of Morpeth and is called St. Mary the Virgin. The burial area is not numbered but A is the section and E is the fifth row from the front of the Section in other words the Dutch are buried in the back row. 1 = leftmost grave. The Morpeth Cemetery (St Mary's), the plot where the graves are, is part of the Church extension which actually belongs to the Local Authority and the plot is set right at the back, out of the way and the main entrance is actually a public footpath with no visible signs to identify the cemetery as such.

Note that the church mentioned by the CWGC, SS Mary and James, does not exist. This name is a mixup of two separate churches in Morpeth. The church of St. James the Great is on Newgate street; the church of St. Mary the Virgin is West on the A197. The Castle Morpeth Borough Council is the Burial Authority. In its Best Value Review Report, 2001, the cemetery is referred to as St. Mary's.

However, it seems to be local convention to call the churchyard, located at St. Mary's, the SS Mary & James Churchyard. So the name given by the CWGC is correct. The historical background is that the villagers of the 19th Century found the ancient St. Mary to be too long a walk, especially in winter. In 1844 they started building St. James, in the city center. The two churches are seen as belonging together, and sharing the cemetery located at St. Mary's.

The order of burial is chronological following the date of death, but the Dutchies and Beresford were buried with one grave space left open (nrs. 34, 36, 38, 40 & 42), perhaps in anticipation of Polish casualties that were sure to come. This indicates a deliberate design rather than a later reburial. Or so we believed, until Rob Venema came up with a 1943 photograph of this churchyard. This photo shows that the graves were rearranged by the CWGC, at which occasion the original wooden crosses were replaced by headstones. The design of the rearrangement deviates from the usual practice of burying next to each other those who died together. This design aims to intertwine the nationalities of these casualties.
