REASON FOR LOSS

On the night of the 7th/8th March 1945 625 Sqn detailed twenty-two (22) aircraft to join the force of five-hundred and twenty-six (526) Lancasters and five (5) Mosquitoes to bomb Dessau and its industrial infrastructure. NG324 took off at 17:01hrs from RAF Kelstern in Lincolnshire.

Of the eighteen (18) Lancasters lost on this mission NG324 was the only aircraft from 625 Sqn that failed to return. It has been reported that the aircraft crashed at 20:45 hrs in or near the Versetalsperre reservoir, 6 km (3¾ mls) ESE from Lüdenscheid and some 323 km (201 mls) WSW of the target at Dessau.

The time of take-off, the distance from the target and the reported time of the crash makes it appear that this loss was during the outbound leg of the mission. This places the aircraft in a position that makes it a possible victim of Lt. Kurt Matzak, his 16th Abschuss, from Stab IV./NJG1, who claimed a Lancaster in the Lüdenscheid-Olpe area at 20:31 hrs. (Nachtjagd Combat Archive (1 January 1945 - 3 May 1945) Part 6 - Theo Boiten).

(war substantive) (London Gazette 2nd March 1945).

Fg Off. Harry Chapman married Margaret Ball of Leicester on the 9th December 1943.

(2) In the absence of any record of his death or of any Escape and Evasion Report and despite the absence of a ‘General Questionnaire for British/American Ex-Prisoners of War’ it is surmised that he became a PoW and was held at Dulag Luft, Wetzlar along with Sgt. Hessey and Sgt. Walker.

(3) 1672984 LAC. Akenhead was appointed to a commission and promoted to 164761 Plt Off. on probation (war substantive) on the 7th April 1944 (London Gazette 27th June 1944). He was confirmed in this appointment and promoted to Fg Off. (war substantive) on the 7th October 1944 (London Gazette 27th October 1944).

(4) Sgt. Hessey baled out and suffered cuts to his face. He was captured in the vicinity of the crash that day. The only information provided in his ‘General Questionnaire for British/American Ex-Prisoners of War’ is that he was held at Dulag Luft, Wetzlar from the 22nd until the 1st April 1945. He was interviewed on the 24th April 1945.

Bernard passed away on the 13th February 2002 in Bristol, Gloucestershire.

(5) Sgt. Walker baled out and was captured on the 9th March in Lüdenscheid area. The only information provided in his ‘General Questionnaire for British/American Ex-Prisoners of War’ is that he was held at Dulag Luft, Wetzlar from the 23rd until the 27th March 1945. It appears that he was liberated from there as he was interviewed on the 7th April 1945.

Frank Walker was born on the 4th November 1911 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire West Riding. He was working in the Textile industry prior to enlisting in the RAFVR in July 1941.

He married Grace Margaret Goodall on the 3rd November 1935 in Longwood, Yorkshire West Riding.
