REASON FOR LOSS:
NZ801 seen at about 09:15 in a left hand gliding turn at 1000 feet, but crashed shortly afterwards on the north side of the Waimakariri River near West Eyreton, apparently as the result of a spin.
The pilot was seriously injured and admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but died there the following morning and was later cremated at Auckland.
Burial details:
LAC. Douglas Moir. Auckland Crematorium (Waikumete). Born on the 27th January 1922 in Gisborne. Educated at Henilton Technical High school. Worked as a leadlight maker for Beath and Chapman Ltd, Hamilton. Enlisted at Levin on the 08th February 1942, Trained at No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School commencing on the 05th April 1942. A total of 15 solo flying hours logged, all on the Tiger Moth.
