DFC Citation:
'The citation published on the occasion of the award is as follows: Squadron Leader J.S. Shorthouse, DFC 'On one occasion this officer was detailed to carry out an attack on Mannheim. Whilst still 80 miles from the target one engine of his aircraft was knocked out and the aircraft began to lose height. It was typical of this officer that he never even considered turning back despite the fact that he could not maintain height above fifteen thousand feet. Although engaged by flak and searchlights over the traget, Squadron Leader Shorthouse pressed hom his attack in the face of heavy opposition and was so successful he brought back a photograph of the Aiming Point;.
