The Wellington was last observed by another aircraft on same exercise at 16:01 in position 5753 N. 0830 W, in the vicinity of Boreray Island.
LA995 was then flying very low in the leeward of the island which is 1,245 ft high, and appeared to be flying towards very distinct downdraughts alongside of the island.
The aircraft was then lost to view in the rain and was thought to have gone into the sea.
The aircraft had taken off I hr. 1l min. before this with a full load of 3,0350 lbs. Despite extensive search the next day over the full area of the exercise carried out by ten aircraft and another aircraft searching the immediate vicinity of the island, no dinghy, wreckage or other indication was seen.

In 1978 the Air Historical Branch (AHB) tasked the team to investigate aircraft wreckage that had been reported on the Isle of Soay, by some yachtsmen.
It was rumoured to be the remains of Wellington VIII LA 995 from RAF Stornoway which crashed in February 1943. Soay was extremely difficult to get to and we were deployed by a Sea King which had recently entered service.
On the first visit, we took EOD specialists from Wittering, the Procurator fiscal and a CID Sergeant from Stornoway. Despite three trips and a night stop over the next two years any evidence we found could not confirm that the aircraft was LA995.
(1) The body of Sgt. Alston was washed up on the Isle of Lewis and claimed by his family.
