REASON FOR LOSS:
Earlier, whilst serving with 249 squadron based at Luqa, Malta, was forced to bale out over Italy. He was taken PoW but managed to escape.

On this occasion he was taking part on a patrol supporting the allied invasion at Normandy. Very little known regarding the incident except that he was hit by flak and did bale out of his Mustang.It is thought his parachute failed to deploy fully.
Burial and personal details:
F/O. William David Wendt. Eturqueraye Churchyard. Born on the 06th May 1916. Enlisted in the RCAF on the 20th March 1941 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Son of August and Neva Harvey Wendt, of Little Falls, Minnesota, United States of America. Grave inscription: 'When A Good Man Dies... The Light He Leaves Behind Him Shines Upon The Lives Of Men'.
