On 19th August 1942, Squadron Leader Geoffrey Cochrane Hyde of No. 41 Squadron RAF piloted Spitfire Vb BL777 (serial number, code EB-V) from RAF Tangmere in support of Operation Jubilee, the raid on Dieppe, France. The squadron was brought to readiness at 04:30 hours and ordered to patrol off Dieppe at 4,000-5,000 feet at 05:45 hours. Squadron Leader Hyde, aged 27, was killed in action during this operation.
