RAF Transport Command was formed on 25 March 1943 by renaming and expanding RAF Ferry Command. It acted as the primary logistical arm of the Royal Air Force during World War II.
Core WWII Roles & Operations
• Aircraft Ferrying: Delivered thousands of American and Canadian-built aircraft (such as Douglas Dakotas) from North American and domestic factories to operational units.
• Air Transport & Logistics: Moved troops, freight, and medical evacuations across global routes spanning North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
• Airborne Operations: Took over paratroop dropping duties and glider-towing support (including participation in D-Day and Operation Market Garden via No. 46 Group).
• Special Mail Deliveries: Operated specially modified Spitfires and Hurricanes through units like No. 1697 Flight to fly secret mail directly to the Normandy beachheads.
Key WWII Structure & Command
• Headquarters: Bush House in London initially, moving to Harrow in April 1943.
• First Commander: Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick W. Bowhill.
• Major Groups:
• No. 44 Group (Transport)
• No. 45 Group (Atlantic Ferry/Transport, based out of Dorval, Canada)
• No. 46 Group (Transport support and airborne operations)
• No. 216 Group (Middle East air transport and ferrying)
• Primary WWII Aircraft: Douglas Dakota (by far the most heavily used), alongside types like the Wellington, Warwick, Liberator, and Stirling.
