Overview of the Hellenic Air Force in World War II
The Hellenic Air Force (HAF) was crucial during World War II, particularly in the early stages of the conflict. It faced significant challenges but also achieved notable successes.
Initial Resistance Against Italy
Aircraft Strength: The HAF began the war with only 79 aircraft.
Italian Invasion: In October 1940, the Italian forces invaded Greece, expecting a quick victory. However, the HAF played a vital role in resisting this invasion.
Combat Achievements: The HAF successfully shot down 64 confirmed enemy aircraft during the Greco-Italian War, contributing to the eventual repulsion of Italian forces.
Engagement with German Forces
German Invasion: Following the Italian campaign, Germany invaded Greece in April 1941. The Luftwaffe targeted Greek airfields, leading to significant losses for the HAF.
Survival and Reformation: Despite heavy losses, including the destruction of most of its aircraft, some Greek pilots managed to escape to the Middle East, where they reformed under British command.
Operations in Exile
Reconstitution: The HAF was reestablished in Egypt, forming three main squadrons:
13th Light Bombing Squadron: Utilized Avro Anson and Bristol Blenheim aircraft.
335th and 336th Fighter Squadrons: Operated Hawker Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft.
Contributions: Greek pilots participated in various operations, including anti-submarine warfare and offensive patrols, significantly aiding the Allied efforts in North Africa.
Legacy
The Hellenic Air Force's resilience and contributions during World War II are remembered as a symbol of national pride and international cooperation, particularly in the fight against Axis powers.
