On 22nd March 1940, Flight Officer Claude Mervyn Wheatley, aged 26, piloted Supermarine Spitfire PR IB serial number N3069 of the Photographic Development Unit from RAF Heston on a high-altitude photographic reconnaissance mission. The aircraft was tasked with photographing German industrial targets in the Ruhr valley and was planned to operate at approximately 33,000 feet, an altitude at which it was believed to be beyond the reach of enemy fighters.
