Almost 17,000 airmen made their way by various incredible means to reach the shores of Great Britain after the fall of Poland in 1939. Their abiding wish was to avenge the German assault of their homeland and families by every means at their disposal. That they did so with honour and undaunted courage - every one of them, from the office orderly to the highest ranking commander - is testament of their pledge to Poland : Love Demands Sacrifice. This pledge was embroidered on the Polish Air Force banner by nuns in occupied Poland and smuggled to Britain through war-torn Europe in 1941. In this database we record key details of every airman who served in PAF in the UK. Use the Addition button to send additional information via our Help Desk.

Brytanii. - Rok później 30 października 1942, w załodze „Halifax” 1942 zginął – RAF Tempsford-„Halifax”-W7773- specjalny lot bojowy nad Polskę ze zrzutami broni, amunicji i trzema skoczkami. Według informacji Międzynarodowego Czerw. Krzyża z 1943 roku, potwierdzonej przez Niemców w 1944 roku, samolot został zestrz. przez art. plotn. i rozbił się między Helleren a Refsland w Norwegii. Na rozkaz dowódcy 3 członków załogi wysk. ze spadochronami: por.Henryk Aleksandrowicz i kpr. Marian Ćwikalski (dostali się do niewoli), oraz kpr. Franciszek Kula (przed. się do nie okup. części Francji i wrócił do Anglii 06.10.1942). kpr Stefan P. Rueger został postrzelony w tylnej kabinie strzelca. Pozostali członkowie załogi, obaj piloci Tadeusz M. Czołowski i Mieczysław Seredyn – przekon. że tylny strzelec jest ranny, podjęli skutecz. próbę ugaszenia i dolecieli do Anglii lądując przymus. pod Manston. Kpr. Stefan Reuger już nie żył – został poch. na cmen. w Newark (311/H) UK. - W dniu 03.02.1943 – RAF Hemswell-“Wellington”-Z1392- lot boj. bombar. Hamburg. Samolot został zestrz. przez niem. myśl. i rozbił się pod Oostermeer, Friesland (Holandia). Pilot M. Seredyn ocalał i dostał się do niewoli. Reszta załogi zginęła. – M. Seredyn zmarł w Oleksowie gm. Gniewoszów, pow. Kozienice i tam poch. na cment. parafialnym. Polska
Added by Stefan Pietrzak Youngs: 1942-08-29 Wellington Z1460 SM-N 305 Squadron, forced landing Manston aerodrome Kent, returning from an operational flight over Saarbrucken, Germany, 29 August 1942. Wellington was attacked by enemy a/c on return flight from Saarbrücken. Probably by Hptm Patuschka Horst 8./NJG 2. Some crew had bailed out, but aircraft landed safely at Manston. P/O Alexandrowicz, Sgt Cwiklinski and Sgt Kula parachuted down at Braine-l'Alleud. The radio operator, Cwiklinski, fell in a schoolyard and apparently Alexandrowicz was wounded in a leg by a bullet. Pilots F/L Tadeusz Czolowski and Sgt Mieczyslaw Seredyn returned safely. They wanted to save the rear gunner (Sgt Rueger) who was terminally wounded in the burning aeroplane. Eventually they managed to put the fire out and made it back to base. The rest of the crew baled out over the continent when it seemed that the aeroplane was unlikely to stay airborne for long. Sgt Mieczyslaw Cwiklinski and P/O Alexandrowicz were captured. Sgt Franciszek Kula evaded and made it back to Britain by October. Sergeant St. P Rueger (Polish): killed; Flight Lieutenant T M Szolowski (Polish): uninjured; Lieutenant T M Szolowski, Pilot Officer H Alexandrowicz (Polish), Sergeant M Cwiklinski (Polish), prisoners of war; Sergeant F Kula (Polish) evaded.

DFC and DFM awarded as follows: Distinguished Flying Cross. CZOLOWSKI, Tadeusz Mieczyslaw. F/L (P1079) 305(P)Sqn. Approved: 9/10/1942. Joint citation with SGT M SEREDYN. Awarded the DFM.

On the night of 28th August, 1942, Flight Lieutenant Czolowski and Sergeant Seredyn were 1st and 2nd pilot respectively of a Wellington aircraft detailed to attack a target at Saarbrucken. When nearing the objective, flying at 18,000 feet, the Wellington was subjected to separate attacks by 2 fighters. The first attack was driven off leaving a trail of black smoke. During the second attack the rear gunner in the bomber was mortally wounded whilst the aircraft sustained severe damage and the fuselage filled with smoke from ignited incendiary bombs. Height had been lost to 5,000 feet and the undercarriage, bomb doors and flaps were hanging down and there were no lights. Flight Lieutenant Czolowski jettisoned his bombs and ordered the crew to abandon the aircraft. Sergeant Seredyn volunteered to remain and after assisting others of the crew to abandon the aircraft succeeded in extinguishing the fires. Displaying superb airmanship Flight Lieutenant Czolowski continued the return journey and despite further difficulties which were encountered, returned to base where a crash landing was made successfully. Flight Lieutenant Czolowski and Sergeant Seredyn displayed courage and fortitude worthy of high praise.

Added by Stefan Pietrzak Youngs: 1943-02-03 Wellington lV Z1392 SM-O 305 Sqd. Shot down by enemy fighter, crashed near Oostermeer. Crew: Four crew died as a result of the crash. They were buried together at the Torenlaan cemetery and later reburied at Polish cemetery in Breda; Henryk Leon Gzell, Alfons Kowalski, Bernard Kozłowski, Edward Lesisz. Only the aircraft captain, Sgt. Mieczyslaw Seredyn, survived. He jumped late and landed with his parachute close to the crashed plane. Treated by a doctor at Nicolai family at the Boskwei and later taken prisoner by the Germans.

Po przeszkoleniu otrzymał przydział do personelu latającego w 301DB. Następny przydział to 138DS RAF. -1942 zginął – RAF Tempsford-„Halifax”-W7773- specjalny lot boj. nad Polskę ze zrzutami broni, amunicji i trzema skoczkami. Wg informacji Międzynar. Czerw. Krzyża z 1943 r. i potwierdzonej przez Niemców w 1944 r. samolot został zestrz. przez artylerię plotn. i rozbił się między Helleren a Refsland w Norwegii. Zginęła cała załoga. – poch. wszystkich we wspólnym grobie na cmen. w Egersund (11/B/8), a 1953 roku na cmentarzu w w Vestre Gravlund Oslo., Norwegia.

Polish SOE Agents: Lt Stanisław H Hencel aka 'Pik', Lt Wiesław Szapowicz aka 'Pak', 2nd Lt Jerzy Bichniewicz aka 'Bleckitny'. The mystery of the disappearance of the plane with the Polish crew is partly explained after the war. Halifax W7773 crashed at the foot of Norewskiej rocks, near the town of Egersund, between Helleren and Refsland. The explosion scattered debris of aircraft within a radius of several hundred metres, some rolled into a nearby lake. Crew initially buried Egersund Cemetery, exhumed in 1953 and reinterred in collective grave 11-B-8 in Oslo Western Civil Cemetery at Vestre Gravlund
