On the night of 19th/20th September 1944, Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson VC, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, piloted Mosquito B.XX KB267 (code AZ:E) of 627 Squadron from RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on an operation to Mönchengladbach/Rheydt in Germany. Gibson, aged 26, was the celebrated pilot who had led the famous Dambusters raid in May 1943 and had returned to operations after completing his tour.
