His remains went missing for decades – until two metal detectorists stumbled across parts of the aircraft wreckage at Blackacre in Theydon Bois, Essex, while looking for Roman coins. Benzie, from Winnipeg, was born on March 14 1915 and educated at St John’s Technical School. He served in Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry for three years prior to joining the RAF on a short service commission and came to England on March 16 1939 on the RMS Aurania. “He was trained by experienced instructors, men like John Betty, who had hundreds of hours in their logbook. “The training was thorough but, in the words of Tom Neil, his near contemporary at Montrose, still harked back to the last war. “He got his wings at Montrose in December 1939 and was commissioned as Pilot Officer. “After further training on Hurricanes he was posted to 242 Squadron at Church Fenton.” The squadron moved to France after the German invasion and he was shot down and baled out near Dunkirk on May 23. After recovering from his wounds, he re-joined the squadron on July 11, right at the start of the Battle of Britain, already a battle-scarred veteran. Benzie took off in Hurricane P2962 on September 7 and never returned from a combat over the Thames Estuary. He was reported missing “but believed to have lost his life”. A cable to his parents John and Agnes Benzie from Winnipeg on September 9 was confirmed by a letter written two days later. “An uncontrolled Hurricane which crashes into the ground from a great height makes a deep crater and at the time, investigating such crashes was not a high priority so Benzie was commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. “It was not until 1976 that an aircraft archaeology group found the wreck of a Hurricane and the remains of the pilot at a depth of 18 feet underground. “The location, Theydon Bois, Essex, fitted Benzie’s last known position.” “No conclusive evidence to identify the aircraft or the pilot could be found to meet their criteria,” “Almost certainly, they are the remains of Pilot Officer John Benzie. He is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 5." Hurricane P2962 failed to return after combat ober the Thames Estuary. Suspected crash site and remains found post war but not positively identified. Runnymede Age 25 | |||

Baled out of Spitfire I (N3049) over East Grinstead after being shot down by a Bf 109. Killed 1940-10-08 at 09:30hrs. Spitfire I (R6779) was shot down by a Bf 109 near Chatham, crashed at Bayfors Marshes. Upchurch St Mary Churchyard England br>Born November 4, 1919 Saskatchewan Canada. On a family holiday to England he applied to the de Havilland Aircraft Company’s Aeronautical Technical School at Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Joined RAFVR in November 1937. Training at No. 9 Advanced Flying Training School, posted to No. 7OTU at Hawarden, Cheshire, on July 7, 1940 on Spitfires. July 26 reported to 66Sqn at Coltishall, Norfolk. First true combat experience on September 9, 1940, and it was not a pleasant experience. Dodging often heavy rain showers, Pilot Officer Corbett was part of a group attacking German bombers, escorted by enemy fighters, intent on attacking London. After already damaging a Messerschmitt 109, he was positioning his aircraft for a rear attack on a bomber when he was bounced by three German fighters. With the cockpit filling with smoke and the controls jammed, he found himself in a severely damaged, uncontrolled aircraft plummeting toward the ground in a tight spiral dive. At 12,000 feet (3,658 metres), he bailed out, suffering a slight injury in the process. September 27 intercepted German bombers attacking London. In the midst of heavy British defensive fire from anti-aircraft guns below, he got a quick burst into one bomber before breaking off the attack and leaving the damaged enemy aircraft to other RAF fighters. He then selected a lone Junkers 88 as his next target, closed to within yards of the German aircraft, and opened fired. The enemy aircraft fell away, its port engine burning fiercely, but the smoke was so thick that Corbett had to break off the attack. His Spitfire was damaged by friendly fire when an artillery shell burst nearby, destroying one elevator and riddling the fuselage and starboard wing with shrapnel. He skillfully executed a forced landing in the London district of Orpington, emerging from his damaged but repairable Spitfire with a new-found respect for anti-aircraft gunners and a Junkers 88 claimed as destroyed. On October 8, 1940, Pilot Officer Corbett, wearing a new watch sent by his parents as a 21st birthday gift, was climbing with his squadron to intercept yet another formation of German raiders when they were surprised by a large number of Messerschmitt 109s. In a slashing attack, Corbett and one other 66 Squadron pilot were shot down near Bayford Marches, Upchurch; neither pilot survived. The Reverend William Joseph Wright was at his church, St. Margaret of Antioch, and witnessed the dogfight. When Corbett’s aircraft crashed, the clergyman ran to the site, hoping to provide assistance. But “…it was clear, due to the bullet damage around the cockpit, that the pilot had been killed instantly before the crash. I offered prayers and a blessing, and stayed until the body was recovered. The pilot’s own parachute was used as a shroud.” Back in Canada, in a cruel twist of fate, his mother, Mabel, received a letter from her son days after being officially informed that he had been killed. Corbett wrote, “Having got out OK, my confidence has tremendously increased and I want you to be confident also. We’re seeing plenty of action here every day and I’ll be back in the fight tomorrow. The Jerries are a long way from getting supremacy in the air, and until they get it, there’ll be no invasion.” Our heroes of the Battle of Britain clearly understood what they were fighting and sacrificing for. | Profile of George Corbett Battle of Britain Database |

Grave 39. United Kingdom. Son Of George Gordon Hyde, K.C., And Lilian B. Hyde, Of Montreal, Province Of Quebec, Canada. Born in Montréal in 1914. Educated at Westmount High School and Trinity College. Joined the RCAF in 1938. Posted to 1Sqn RCAF—later this unit would be renamed in the 400-series RCAF numbers as 401Sqn RCAF. Joined other squadrons of the RAF in June 1940 as the only RCAF squadron yet deployed in the war. At the end of August, he was shot down by Luftwaffe fighters over Staplehurst, England. Parachuted to safety, but was injured and burned. After recovery, transferred to the new 112Sqn RCAF (soon to become 2 and then finally 402Sqn RCAF) at RAF Digby. 112 had arrived with Lysanders, but since they were at a distinct disadvantage in aerial battle, they were relegated to coastal duties until December of 1940 when the unit converted to Hurricanes and started calling themselves 2Sqn RCAF. On 17 May 1941, Hyde took part in a flying display at the small town of Metheringham. The digital archive for RAF Digby remembers the event: “402 Squadron (sic) Flight Lieutenant George Hyde gave an outstanding and long remembered display of aerobatics over Metheringham.” Following the display, which was part of Metheringham’s War Weapons Week, Hyde crashed and was killed on his way home to Digby. Shot down 31 August 1940 at 09:15hrs by Bf 109s. Baled out of Hurricane I (P2971) over Cranbrook, suffering burns. Posted to 1665 HCU at Woolfax Lodge; at this unit, he joined up with pilot FS R. B. Herger and the rest of his crew, before being posted to 190 Squadron. On 8 February 1944 to 190 Squadron as Flying Officer. This squadron had been reformed at RAF Station Leicester East as an airborne forces squadronfor supply-dropping missions over France in April 1944. The squadron was involved in the dropping of airborne troops behind enemy lines in Normandy on D-Day, and continued operating supply missions over French Occupied Territory in the following months. From 17–23 September 1944, 190 Squadron played an important part in the support mission of Operation Market Garden, suffering heavy losses. Antoft took part in these operations from the beginning of May. On 6–7 May 1944, his crew had made an unsuccessful attempt to drop containers near Montaner, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in France, for SOE. During May, the squadron practiced glider towing, container dropping, and fighter affiliation, in preparation for the coming invasion. Very few operational sorties were carried out during this time. 5 June, the crew were briefed for phase two of Operation Tonga. In the first phase of this operation, glider-borne troops from Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry would attack the bridges over the Caen canal and Orne River, east of the Bénouville. Then, as part of the second phase of the operation, twenty-three Stirlings from each of the two squadrons at RAF Station Fairford (190 and 620 Squadrons) would be dropping 887 airborne troops of the 7th Parachute Battalion in an area on the north-east side of Ranville (drop zone ‘N’). These troops were to set up a defensive perimeter around the bridges. From June to August 1944, 190Sqn involved in supply missions for the French Resistance and for the SOE, as well as missions dropping SAS groups behind enemy lines. From 14 June to 11 September 1944, Antoft took part in fourteen such missions. Most operations involved dropping containers, panniers and packages, but on several missions additional SAS paratroops were dropped over France. On 17 September 1944, Antoft flew the first of four operational missions in Operation Market Garden. On the first day of the operation, the unit carried the pathfinders of the 21st Independent Parachute Company that marked the landing zones for the first lift. At approximately 10.45 hours, twenty-five Stirlings from both 190 and 620 Squadrons took off from Fairford and set course for Arnhem. Six of the aircraft acted as pathfinders, while the remaining nineteen, including Antoft’s crew, were towing gliders that contained 130 airborne troops, seventeen jeeps, seven light and one heavy motor cycle, seventeen trailers, seven guns, and one bicycle. All except one carried out their sorties. Several aircraft were hit by flak, but the operational record also reports that the enemy flak positions were well beaten up by Allied fighters. In the following days, the unit was deeply engaged in the resupply missions. The Danish fighter pilot Flt Lt K. C. J. Pedersen took part in the operation as well; he was part of a group of eleven Spitfires from 1 Squadron who provided low-level escort to aircraft, gilders, and tugs. At 12.10 hours. on 18 September 1944, Stirling IV (LJ943), with Antoft, took off from Fairford. The Stirling was towing a Horsa glider, carrying supplies strongly needed in Arnhem. Whilst over Holland, the aircraft was drawn into the slipstream of a Dakota. The pilot, FS Herger, took evasive action and the tow rope snapped. The Horsa, piloted by S/Sgt Newton and Sgt Douglas of No. 10 Flight, G Squadron, landed the glider safely near the village of Oude-Tonge on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee—many miles from Arnhem. The next day, 19 September, the crew flew the third sortie for Arnhem. Sixteen Stirlings took off at 13.05 hours. to drop containers and panniers in the Arnhem area. They encountered heavy flak and many aircraft returned damaged. Two aircraft failed to return. Two days later, Antoft was in the air again. In Holland, the British troops were trapped near Arnhem. The crew was briefed on a position in Oosterbeek, but, given the critical situation on the ground, no definite dropping point was fixed beforehand. Instead, the crew was to drop the load at 1,000 feet after a signal from the ground troops in that area, north-west of Arnhem. Antoft’s crew carried out the drop successfully, despite concentrated heavy and light flak throughout the run-in. At some point the aircraft (LJ943/C) was hit several times, and caught fire. The Air Gunner, WO J. C. Thomas (R.173863, RCAF) attempted to extinguish the fire, but failed—being cut off from the rest of the crew, he baled out at between 300 to 400 feet. The Flight Engineer, Sgt Hillyard, also managed to bale out, while the aircraft crashed north of a farm at Zetten. Sgt Hillyard had seen both FO MacDonell and Antoft putting on their parachutes in order to follow him out of the aircraft, but, for unknown reasons, they never left. WO Thomas and Sgt Hillyard were captured by the Germans within minutes of their landing; the rest of the crew, including Antoft, were killed in action. Initially, they were buried in the Refuge-Hill Church Cemetery in Zetten with the casualties of another Stirling loss (LJ982). The Dutch locals who were taking care of the casualties initially accounted for fifteen bodies of the eighteen crew missing. Following the liberation of the area, the bodies were reinterred at the Oosterbeek Airborne Cemetery, Arnhem, Holland. | Aircrew Deaths Database Danish Profiles Allied Losses Database LJ953 |
