DUPLICATES EXIST IN THIS DATABASE
We have integrated entries from several databases in the Paradie Archive and as a result there may be more than one entry for a given individual. To ensure you read all the data we have on a person, use the Service Number (without the prefix J/ P/ R/ etc.) to perform a further search for more information on that person.
DATA ALIGNMENT IN PROCESS OF BEING ADJUSTED
Owing to problems with encoding methods, some records require manual adjustment to bring data elements within the record into alignment. This is a lengthy and ongoing process. If the record you are looking at is hard to read, it means we have yet to make the appropriate manual adjustments, so send us a message via the Helpdesk and we will correct that record.

Most records were originally encoded with aircraft serial numbers in the format AB 123. The standard is to use the format AB123. We have a long term project underway to change all serial numbers to the standard form, but with 50,000+ records this is a long process.

Take off at 20:55 hours for practice circuits. The crew had been involved at 18:50 hours in an aborted take-off when Halifax LK871 was damaged beyond economical repair having it swung violently to starboard on take-off for the second time, the starboard wheel left the metalled runway and dug in causing the aircraft to ground loop, the port tyre then burst and the port undercarriage collapsed. Without being medically checked the crew were assigned to Halifax Mk.III serial number LK878 and ordered to carry on with the exercise! Taking off for the second time the aircraft in less than three minutes flew into high ground at Catcliffe Wood near Felixkirk, 4 miles NE of Thirsk, Yorkshire at roughly 20:59 hours. The aircraft initially struck the ground of a snow-covered field near the village of Felixkirk, immediately bounced across a narrow lane and into an area of woodland and broke up on impact, the rear turret coming adrift. When rescuers arrived at the scene the Rear Gunner was still alive but succumbed to his injures. Northallerton Military Hospital records record that at 22:15 hours the "Mobile Surgical unit proceeded to Felixkirk at the request of RCAF Topcliffe." The injured airman was removed from the car and transferred to the ambulance. "He was in a very poor condition and died immediately after admission to hospital (at Northallerton) from multiple injuries". The Humber (vehicle) had to be abandoned half a mile from the scene of the crash owing to deep snow. Personnel walked through the snow to the crash. The surgical unit returned to Northallerton at 00:15 hours". 12	Karstens	William Russell	Pilot Officer			Killed 1944-10-04 Age 22		J/92361	W/Op/Air/Gnr	419Sqn (Moose) RCAF	Lancaster X KB745	Lancaster X KB745 from RAF Middleton St George. 89 Halifaxes from 420, 424, 425, 431, 433, and 434 squadrons were joined by 39 Lancasters from 419 and 428 squadrons on an attack on the U-boat pens and dock area of Bergen. The crews were over the target at between 12,000 and 14,000 feet, releasing 1,315,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, the harbour and dock area were well hit with some loads creeping into the built up area. German U-Boats had been forced out of the Biscay ports following the Allied liberation of France and Bergen was one of several Norwegian ports now being used as thu forward operating bases for the U-boats. The pens at Bergen were being enlarged, with an influx of German technicians and a large labour force. 93 Halifaxes and 47 Lancasters of 6 and 8 Groups were dispatched to attack Bergen, most of the aircraft being allocated to the pens but 14 Halifaxes and 6 Lancasters were ordered to bomb individual U-boats known to be moored in the harbour. 12 Mosquitoes of 100 Group acted as a long-range fighter escort. KB745 crashed into the Cheviot Hills near the Scottish border after the bombing raid on Norwegian U-boat pens.
