NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

PoW No 3342, Stalag Luft 3 Sagan & Belaria

Flt.Lt. Boag’s statement of the circumstances of the loss of the aircraft. "Reaching turn onto target, flew radius of action to waste time and returned. Had just reached turn again picking up datum for timed run when W/Op reported fighter 100 yards astern closing on his equipment. Acknowledged by rear gunner. Nothing furthermore few seconds when cannon shell hit us ahead of my position. Bomb Aimer stood up and asked the pilot to open bomb doors to jettison. Just then I together with Bomb Aimer was thrown forward and knocked out. On regaining my senses found I was sitting on the instrument panel with head against perspex. Starboard wing well alight and both motors feathered. We seemed to be going straight down so I bailed out where the side had been blown away. At approx 2000 feet I saw the plane hit immediately ablaze all over. I could not see if the skipper was still in his seat or not. I believe he was hit in the first attack and while I was out he succeeded in feathering both starboard motors and I think getting rid of the bomb load apart from markers which were selected off. I did not know who had got out but was afterwards told by the Germans I was the only survivor. This I am convinced was due to Starboard engines being feathered enabling me to get out there. This was done by the skipper F/O J C H Davies on his own as the Engineer was in the nose at the time of the attack. I would like to place on record his actions while wounded and also his attempt to put the fire out and I personally think that some recognition should be made."

Promoted to Flt.Lt. whilst as a PoW (4 February 1945)
