NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

1940-07-08HurricaneIP3461Intereception incoming raid Do-17sShot downKilled Hawkinge Cemetery United Kingdom

F/O Mitchell’s Hurricane crashed at Green Lane, Temple Ewell, near Dover. The crater burned for well over an hour and no positive identification could be made of F/O ‘Tubby’ Mitchell’s mortal remains until armourers had checked the serial numbers from his Browning machine-guns. F/O ‘Tubby’ Mitchell possibly fell to the guns of Oberleutnant Josef Fözö of the 4th Staffel of Jagdgeschwader 51 who claimed the destruction of a ‘Spitfire’ north of Dover at 3.45pm. His wife, Carmen, had given birth to their only child, a boy, Anthony William, on 23rd June 1940, and it is believed that Flying Officer ‘Tubby’ Mitchell only saw his son on one occasion when he flew to Northolt to visit the nursing home at Stoke Poges, Bucks, before he was killed. At 3.15pm, Pilot Officer ‘Dimsie’ Stones found himself leading the Squadron because his section was sent off first from Hawkinge, followed five minutes later by the rest of the squadron (at this time the squadron was depleted to a total of nine aircraft), which was scrambled to intercept an incoming raid in the Dover area. The Squadron searched fruitlessly for an hour before being ordered to return to base, land and refuel. ‘Dimsie’ Stones later wrote; ‘ it was one of those days when we had a solid layer of cloud at about 8,000 feet and on turning back to Hawkinge, some 109’s must have come through that overcast and picked off Woody and Tubby Mitchell, who were at the rear of our formation. The rest of us saw nothing.’
