NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

At 2208 hours when flying on a south easterly course at an altitude of 16,000 feet, the aircraft collided with Wellington aircraft X 3924 (Sergeant R B Main (RCAF) (Pilot)) from 26 OTU flying on a north easterly course at the same altitude. Both machines crashed near the main gate at RAF Alconbury not far from the village of Abbots Ripton. Both Pilots had been distracted and saw each other too late to avoid a collision. The pilot of X 3924 pushed the control column forward, causing his tail unit to come into collision with LN 295 on the starboard side in the forward part of the aircraft near the pilot’s cockpit. X 3924 then developed an uncontrolled steep spiral dive to port, which finally resulted into an inverted spin, throwing the pilot through the roof of the cockpit. The aircraft continued to dive at very high speed and it disintegrated due to stress on the airframe. It would have been extremely difficult for the crew to abandon the aircraft, although the Captain had ordered abandon. LN 295 went into a dive from which the pilot was unable to recover. He gave orders to abandon the aircraft, but the inter-com was useless and the call light could not be found. He did not know whether any of the crew had received the order to bale out. The pilot was injured in the collision and finally baled out at 7,000 feet. Both pilots wore their chutes. Five of the crew in LN 295 were killed, Heffernan was injured. Five (three RAF and two RCAF) crew members from X 3924 were killed and the Pilot was injured.

Battle of Britain (marginally)

Top British Ace of War

In 1940 Johnson had an operation to reset his collarbone which severly restricted his flying till 1941 when he and began flying regularly. He took part in the offensive sweeps over German-occupied Europe from 1941 to 1944, almost without rest. Johnson was involved in heavy aerial fighting during this period. His combat tour included participation in the Dieppe Raid, Combined Bomber Offensive, Battle of Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and the Western Allied invasion of Germany. Johnson progressed to the rank of Group Captain by the end of the war and Air Vice Marshal subsequently.

Johnson was credited with 34 individual victories over enemy aircraft, as well as seven shared victories, three shared probable, 10 damaged, three shared damaged and one destroyed on the ground. Johnson flew 700 operational sorties and engaged enemy aircraft on 57 occasions. Included in his list of individual victories were 14 Messerschmitt Bf 109s and 20 Focke-Wulf Fw 190s destroyed making him the most successful RAF ace against the Fw 190. This score made him the highest scoring Western Allied fighter ace against the German Luftwaffe.

Foggia Took part in the brutal air campaign to destroy the large oil production industry based mainly in Romania and Hungary. The targets were heavily defended and the losses were great. Chief among the larger targets was the Ploesti Xenia Synthetic Oil Refinery in Romania, the most heavily defended target to be attacked outside Germany. They attacked targets in Yugoslavia, Italy, Hungary, Czechoslovakiaoslovakia, Romania and Bosnia. These targets were mostly oil refineries and very heavily defended. They included Terni, Nis, Parubice, Ploesti Xenia, Trieste, Prahova and Szony Komarom.
