NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Distinguished Flying Cross. Air Ministry, 6th October 1942. Royal Air Force. The King has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallantry displayed in flying operations against the enemy:- Distinguished Flying Cross. Acting Flight Lieutenant John Herbert Kennard (40715), Reserve of Air Force Officers, No 103 Squadron. One night in September, 1942, Flight Lieutenant Kennard was captain of an aircraft detailed to attack Bremen. When about 15 miles from the target, the bomber was attacked by an enemy fighter, the fire which stunned the rear gunner and caused the bomber’s aileron controls to jam. Displaying commendable courage and flying skill, Flight Lieutenant Kennard eventually evaded his attacker and flew on to his target which he bombed and photographed. While in the target area, his aircraft was hit by fire from the ground defences, which caused damage to the port fuel tanks. A serious amount of petrol was lost but despite this and the difficulty of controlling the aircraft, Flight Lieutenant Kennard reached this country and made a safe landing due to the jammed aileron. His courage and determination to complete his allotted task were worthy of high praise.

DFC Citation: Flying Officer Morey has completed numerous sorties over enemy territory as navigator. He has participated in attacks on most of the distant and heavily defended targets in Germany and Italy. On one occasion, after an attack on Bremen, his aircraft was badly damaged in an encounter with a night fighter. Flying Officer Morey’s cool determination and skill thus enabled the Captain to fly the aircraft safely back to base. In January 1943, he again showed outstanding coolness and efficiency in extricating the aircraft from a dangerous situation over Essen. Flying Officer Morey has invariably displayed high courage and devotion to duty. (London Gazette 17 August 1943 page 3683)
