| 15 | Bellos | Anthony William | F/O | Baled out Uninjured | Born 1916-07-29 in South Fort George, | J | 35586 | BA | 433Sqn (RCAF)![]() | Lancaster B Mk 1 NG460 BM-A | 1945-02-01 - Took off from RAF Skipton on Swale at 15.23hrs to bomb Ludwigshafen. Bombed target at 19.28hrs but hit by flak which damaged the front turret. The navigation equipment failed but they got a fix to return to Yorkshire. The weather as they approached base was poor and the aircraft encountering severe turbulance. The aircraft lost and then gained height and airspeed a few times in quick succession resulting in everyone in the aircraft who was not strapped being thrown about. The aircraft was flying at around 3,000 feet when the pilot ordered his crew to abandon the aircraft probably fearing he was losing control, two baled out and landed safely. Before anyone else could get clear the aircraft crashed at 23.20hrs into a field near Throstle Nest Farm, between Asenby and Cundall, to the north east of Dishforth. The remaining five members of the crew died as a result of the accident. | (Information courtesy Francois Dutil) These were the first casualties sustained by 433 Sqn in 1945 and it was also their first Lancaster write off. Three more would be lost before the end of the war , from which no-one survived ". . . Got prepared for 7 Lancs from each sqdn toting no less than 1 -4000 pounder &14 five hundred pound incendiaries all the way to Ludwigshafen . . . when they returned poor old Squadron Leader Stinson was missing in 433 A Able. We had seen flames of a crash in the distance but hadn't figured out it was one of ours. Nonetheless it was Stinson who had piled in over near Dalton in a terrific smash-up. Two of the crew bailed out in time but the other 5 bought it. Fri Feb 2: Got up bright and early to rush over and investigate this latest crash. What a horrible mess it was. It looked like he was in a power dive when he went into the deck at about a 30 degree angle & there sure wasn't much left. Three of the 4 engines were buried in the mud out-of-sight with only the tip of one prop blade showing. The fourth engine had been torn out & was burst open along side. Part of the kite had skidded forward & set fire to a farmer's haystack which was still burning when I got there. It was a pretty grisly sight . . . They had enough parts together to make up approximately four bodies but one is still missing in the wreckage somewhere. The only explanation about why it piled in was from the story of the two crew members who bailed out. They were badly shot up with flak over the target & it is thought his controls must have suddenly given way. Courtesy Squadron Leader A. Ross Dawson, the Chief Technical Officer with 424/433 Sqns, caspir.warplane.com He enlisted for RCAF service in 1941 and while serving in the UK he married Patricia Bassett in Middlesex before returning to Canada after the War as a couple. The crews were over the target at between 12,000 and 14,000 feet, releasing 1,315,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, the harbour and dock area were well hit with some loads creeping into the built up area. German U-Boats had been forced out of the Biscay ports following the Allied liberation of France and Bergen was one of several Norwegian ports now being used as thu forward operating bases for the U-boats. | 141 | Pierson | Roy | P/O | ![]() ![]() | KIA | J | 92192 | AG | 433Sqn (RCAF)![]() | Lancaster B Mk 1 NG460 BM-A | 1945-02-01 - Took off from RAF Skipton on Swale at 15.23hrs to bomb Ludwigshafen. | (Information courtesy Francois Dutil) Commemorated: HARROGATE (STONEFALL) CEMETERY Sec. H. Row F. Grave 7. Epitaph: IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR BROTHER WHO DIED GALLANTLY FOR ALL HE HELD DEAR. Son of Harmon Dudley and Annie Marie Pierson, of Taber, Alberta, Canada. These were the first casualties sustained by 433 Sqn in 1945 and it was also their first Lancaster write off. | 234 | Tierney | Thomas Bernard | Pilot Officer | ![]() ![]() | Killed 1944-10-04 Age 22 | J/92476 | Air Gunner | 419Sqn (Moose) RCAF![]() | Lancaster X KB745 | Lancaster X KB745 from RAF Middleton St George. 89 Halifaxes from 420, 424, 425, 431, 433, and 434 squadrons were joined by 39 Lancasters from 419 and 428 squadrons on an attack on the U-boat pens and dock area of Bergen. The pens at Bergen were being enlarged, with an influx of German technicians and a large labour force. 93 Halifaxes and 47 Lancasters of 6 and 8 Groups were dispatched to attack Bergen, most of the aircraft being allocated to the pens but 14 Halifaxes and 6 Lancasters were ordered to bomb individual U-boats known to be moored in the harbour. 12 Mosquitoes of 100 Group acted as a long-range fighter escort. KB745 crashed into the Cheviot Hills near the Scottish border after the bombing raid on Norwegian U-boat pens. | 237 | Trott | Donald Alexander | Pilot Officer | ![]() ![]() | Killed 1944-10-04 Age 19 | J/92914 | Air Gunner | 419Sqn (Moose) RCAF![]() | Lancaster X KB745 | Lancaster X KB745 from RAF Middleton St George. 89 Halifaxes from 420, 424, 425, 431, 433, and 434 squadrons were joined by 39 Lancasters from 419 and 428 squadrons on an attack on the U-boat pens and dock area of Bergen. Son Of David And Pola Zareikin, Of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. His Brother Samuel Also Died On Service. Halifax NP944 was one of 10 engaged in moonlight mine-laying operations off Heligoland and was attacked by an enemy JU-88 night fighter aircraft. Pilot Officer Zareikin was killed during the attack and was the only casualty. The mid-upper gunner, P/C. Cochrane of Jackson, Michigan, USA. shot the enemy aircraft down when it made its next attack. The pilot, Flying Officer W.T. Watson of Toronto, Ontario managed to make a crash landing of the badly damaged aircraft at the Ford aerodrome, England. On 1944-10-05, Squadron Leader A. Ross Dawson, the Chief Technical Officer with 424/433 Sqns at Skipton on Swale, wrote in his diary: "433 Squadron were on a mining or "gardening" effort today with 10 kites. Things went very smoothly & we got them all off in good time. The weather closed in here however later on & we couldn't get them back so 8 were diverted to Tholthorpe and 2 went to Carnaby. M-Mike of 433 was badly shot up with a night fighter & is a cat B. The tail gunner had his head blown off with a 20mm cannon explosive shell. However the MU gunner claimed the JU88 as a "probable" so we hope he knocked it down Ok." | Aircrew Deaths Database | |||
