How to Research a WW2 RAF Veteran

• Order Service Records: WW2 service records are not available online, but you can formally request them through the Ministry of Defence (MOD). You will generally need the veteran's full name, date of birth, and a death certificate (unless they were born more than 116 years ago or died in service).
• Check WAAF Records: Service records for members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) can also be applied for through the same MOD process.
• Consult Military Archives: Use databases like Forces War Records to look up nominal indexes, squadron histories, and Operations Record Books (ORBs) to piece together daily movements and deployments.
• Oral History Projects: Organizations like Legasee War Veterans Video Archive preserve filmed testimonies and firsthand accounts of RAF aircrew and groundcrew members.
