On 19th May 1940, Squadron Leader George Morley Fidler of 607 Squadron (City of Durham) was flying Hurricane I P3535 on an escort operation from the base at Vitry-en-Artois, France. The aircraft was lost near Oisy-le-Verger, France during the operation. Fidler, aged 27 and holding RAF service number 34219, was reported missing and believed killed. He had enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1934 at the age of 21 and rose to the rank of Squadron Leader. The loss occurred during the early stages of
