Overview of the Dutch Air Force in World War II

The Dutch Air Force, known as the Luchtvaartafdeeling, played a significant role during World War II, particularly during the early stages of the conflict.

Key Engagements Battle of the Netherlands (May 1940): The Dutch Air Force engaged German forces with limited aircraft, including the Fokker D.XXI and G.I. Despite being outnumbered and outmatched, they conducted a spirited defense for five days before surrendering.

Post-Fall Operations (1942): After the fall of the Dutch East Indies to Japan, remnants of the Dutch Air Force regrouped in Australia. They operated alongside Allied forces, rebuilding their capabilities with support from the Royal Australian Air Force and American equipment.

Aircraft Used Aircraft Model Role Notes Fokker D.XXI Fighter Main fighter aircraft during the 1940 campaign. G.I Fighter Limited numbers used against German forces. Brewster B-339 Fighter/Bomber Used in the Dutch East Indies before the Japanese invasion. Challenges Faced Limited Resources: The Dutch Air Force struggled with outdated aircraft and insufficient numbers of trained personnel.

Japanese Occupation: The rapid Japanese conquest in early 1942 led to significant losses, forcing the Dutch to rely on Australian bases for rebuilding their air power.

The Dutch Air Force's efforts during World War II highlight their resilience and adaptability in the face of overwhelming odds.

AircrewRemembered has a special section devoted to the Dutch air force personnel lost in WW2, developed by our former colleague and much loved friend Rob Philips and entrusted to us by him shortly before his passing.
